Perform primary functions of a professional nurse director in assessing, planning,
directing, and evaluating patient care in the emergency department to assure optimal
standards of patient care and nursing practice. OSHA Bloodborne pathogens Class I.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The following is intended to describe the major requirements and the major duties, which
comprise the framework for the job. It is not to be construed as an exhaustive statement
of all the duties, responsibilities or requirements. The hospital retains the discretion to
add or change duties at anytime.
  • Assesses plans, directs, and evaluates patient care in the emergency department.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of nursing practice that is consistent with
the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas.
  • Assists in the review and revision of policy and procedure manuals to ensure current
practices are reflected.
  • Assists in review/revision of job descriptions for all nursing personnel in assigned areas.
  • Makes rounds daily, analyzing and evaluating care provisions.
  • Takes responsibility for insuring notification of appropriate personnel as well as followup
for resolution when problem situations are identified.
  • Assists in coordination of emergency care patients, visitors, and employees as
appropriate.
  • Facilitates favorable relationships within the emergency department with the medical
staff and all other departments and seeks input regarding nursing care.
  • Maintains positive and effective working relationships and serves as nursing resource for
all personnel, Medical Staff, and outside agencies.
  • Coordinates work efforts with other departments to assure continuity and quality of
patient care.
  • Assists with the implementation, review, and compliance evaluation of Infection Control
policy and procedures with the facility.
  • Serves as a consultant to other departments in developing/review of multi-disciplinary
policies and procedures. Maintains open communication and a problem-solving
atmosphere with other departments to achieve quality patient care.
  • Manages Emergency department functions and supervision of departmental personnel.
  • Develops staffing patterns in conjunction with the CNO to ensure adequate staffing to
provide quality patient care.
  • Assists in interviewing, hiring, training, disciplinary and evaluates employees, planning,
assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining
employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems and makes recommendations
concerning termination of employees to the CNO insuring compliance with hospital
budget.
  • Develops Emergency Department budget in coordination with CNO, Chief Financial
Officer, and Administrator.
  • Monitors utilization of resources and makes recommendations as needed for changes in
utilization.
  • Assures compliance with federal, state, and other regulatory agency requirements related
to nursing services and patient care provision.
  • Functions in the roll of nursing administrator on call on rotating basis and assures
availability during on call period.
  • Assists with the development of departmental policies and procedures and monitors for
compliance when implemented.
  • Actively participates and assists in Performance Improvement.
  • Develops Emergency Department and Trauma performance Improvement plans focusing
on patient outcomes.
  • Serves as coordinator for Emergency services/Trauma Performance Improvement Team.
  • Serves on committees and/or teams responsible for improving all aspects of patient
care/clinical outcomes as requested or assigned.
  • Evaluates nursing care outcomes in the Emergency Department utilizing the systematic
approach for provision of individualized, goal directed care which includes:
a. Assessment and development of nursing diagnoses.
b. Development of a plan of care.
c. Implementation of the plan.
d. Evaluation of response to care.
  • Assists in education of staff in the Emergency Department to the multi-disciplinary
process of Performance Improvement directed at patient outcome.
  • Identifies educational, training, and performance needs of employees in the Emergency
Department.
  • Assists educator in coordination of opportunities for all staff.
  • Annually reviews education competency and training need with CNO and makes
recommendations for future plans based on review.
  • Insures and maintains confidentiality of both patient and personnel matters.
  • Seeks educational opportunities for self growth both within and outside of the hospital.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional practice.
  • Responsible for coordinating and maintaining Level IV Trauma designation to include:
a. Performance Improvement
b. Trauma Registry
c. Injury prevention
d. Participation in Trauma Advisory Committee on regional and state levels.
Serves as a role model for Emergency Department staff.

Education and/or Experience:
Graduate of an accredited school of Professional Nursing, Bachelor's degree in Nursing
preferred or five to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent
combination of education and experience in nursing managerial and/or supervisory role.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Current Texas Registered Nurse Licensure, BLS required within 30 days of hire, ACLS
required within 90 days of hire, PALS required within 180 days of hire, TNCC required
within 365 days of hire.
