The role:

We are looking to recruit an Underwriting Specialist to join our Pricing and Underwriting COE. As part of our P&U CoE you’ll join a group of experts who ensure that we’re able to write the right risks at the right price. This role will see you use your technical experience to support Direct Line Group providing market leading P&U outcomes, delivering change and operating safely and in line with regulation. As part of the COE you’ll provide thought leadership to help shape future pricing & underwriting as well as enabling squads to deliver effective & efficient governance, control and frameworks to deliver technical standards. As part of our agile model you will be integral to the wider success of the COE, parachuting into squads to provide specialist expertise, unblock issues and enable delivery.

The Team You’ll Join:

You’ll join our Pricing and Underwriting CoE but may be allocated to various interdisciplinary squads, when your skillset is most needed. You’ll have a chapter lead (people manager) who supports your personal development and you’ll also be part of the wider P&U Chapter, with town halls of all 200 of you or in smaller focus groups where you'll be sharing knowledge and ideas, thoughts and ways of working.

What you’ll be doing:

As a member of the P&U Centre of Expertise, you’ll be heavily relied upon for your underwriting expertise. This might be in traditional elements of underwriting such as handling referrals, approvals and policy wording construction but also in areas around new products, distribution opportunities or in new and emerging risks.

  • Utilising your technical and analytical underwriting skill and understanding of pricing as you’ll often work in partnership with your pricing colleagues.
  • Leading the development and management of the P&U Governance and Control framework and you’ll have specific oversight of a new and exciting area of our Motor business.
  • You’ll be a role model for the Chapter, supporting the development of our people, both now and in the longer term – supporting with building technical knowledge and skills in a number of ways e.g coaching, mentoring, setting minimum standards or best practise.
  • Shape thinking on future risks & opportunities.

What you’ll need:

We are keen to meet enthusiastic, passionate and curious individuals from all sorts of specialisms across underwriting.

  • Demonstratable experience in an Underwriting role, with both technical and analytical skills
  • A desire to develop your expertise and also broadening your wider knowledge to enable you to embrace and deliver lots of different scenarios
  • A commercial mentality with the ability to identify risks and opportunities across squads
  • We’ll expect you to have external knowledge around the marketplace, customers and competitors and share this with the team.
