Job Description:


The Individual Insurance and Investments business unit represents close to 30 per cent of all Sun Life Financial global revenue and more than 50 per cent of Canadian earnings. We're a top provider of life, health and wealth products in the Canadian marketplace.

The Underwriting Manager leads a team of Individual Insurance Life and Health Underwriters.


What will you do?

  • Lead and coach underwriters in their service delivery and development
  • Manage workload and priorities while promoting teamwork and a positive environment
  • Develop and implement strategies and processes to improve underwriting efficiency, accuracy, and customer experience
  • Resolve escalated cases and work with the Underwriting team to close gaps and enhance service
  • Using lean management concepts and methodology, identify areas for continuous improvement and implement using problem solving activities
  • Contribute to the leadership team by providing input on planning and priorities
  • Lead a dynamic working environment with staff in multiple locations
  • Collaborate with other key teams including Sales, Marketing and Customer Service to ensure customer satisfaction and improve overall operational performance
  • Be a key resource and champion for the success of projects, process change, and training
  • Support compliance oversight and risk management
  • Develop implement, maintain and monitor internal controls and governance of common and consistent processes across Underwriting
  • Oversee the successful maintenance/completion of SLF Corporate requirements (e.g. Internal and External Audits relating to processes, Business Continuity, Fraud Risk Assessments)
  • Monitor and support risk management and associated controls for the Underwriting functions

What do you need to succeed?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or related field
  • Experienced underwriter with background in Life and Critical Illness insurance
  • Willingness to pursue underwriting education and/or a professional underwriting background
  • Proven leadership experience with a focus on developing high-performing teams
  • A proven track records of driving operational excellence and process improvements in a fast paced environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Able to lead change and act as a change agent
  • Strong analytical and decision making skills (Tableau knowledge an asset)
  • Ability to interpret, assimilate and apply numerous guidelines, reports and data to manage and set priorities
  • Results focused, pro-active and service oriented
  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only as the position includes managing both French and English-speaking staff (Quebec and outside Quebec) and providing daily support to the team

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
