During your internship you will be part of the "Production" side of the company. In production, we grow the baby Yellowtail Kingfish (YTK) that come from the hatchery into markatable sized fish. You will be working in a team next to experienced staff, and you will help out with all kinds of jobs that are required to grow healthy and good looking fish.
Next to the general day-to-day work, you will conduct your own (small) research project to help reduce the level of traditional marine ingredients in our diets. The farming of YTK is relatively new and little research has been done on its nutritional requirements. In the wild, YTK feed on other fish. Therefore the feed we use in the farm contain fish in the form of fishmeal and fish oil, which are mostly caught in the wild. However, the usage of these wild stocks is not sustainable. Therefore, the kingfish company is looking into ways to reduce the use of fishmeal in our diets by using alternative ingredients, while still guaranteeing the best growth as possible. You will assist in conducting feeding trials to test different ingredients that can be used for Yellowtail fish feed. You will monitor water quality and other fish performance indicators.

The Kingfish Company
The Kingfish Company is a pioneer and leader in sustainable land-based aquaculture. We produce the yellowtail kingfish (also known as Ricciola/Hiramasa/Greater Amberjack) which is a highly versatile premium fish species, well known in the Italian and Asian fusion cuisines.
Our operation is based on three core principles: sustainability, respect for our fish, and the environment. These key principles are at the heart of our design, activity, and technology decisions. Production of our fish is based on advanced recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), which create the ideal growth environment for kingfish, offer optimal biosecurity, and limit the environmental impact. Animal welfare is paramount and our fish are grown without the use of antibiotics and vaccines. Operations run on 100% renewable energy, sourced from wind, solar, and biogas and the company’s facilities operate on seawater to avoid wasting precious fresh water.
Current annual production capacity at its Kingfish Zeeland facility in the Netherlands is 1,500 tons of high-quality and high-value Yellowtail Kingfish. Expansion is underway and capacity in the Netherlands will reach 3,500 tons in the second half of 2022. In the US, permitting for the company’s approximate 8,500 tons capacity facility is progressing as planned, with production start scheduled for the second half of 2023.
We are a fast-growing company with multiple large-scale expansion projects currently underway and we are looking forward to welcoming new people into our team and exciting future.
