Master Thesis - The Combined Power of AI: Can reasoning overcome ML algorithms limitations for object tracking in a picture sequence? [Austria]

Your future responsibilities
The successful candidate will work on an innovative project aimed at combining the power of modern data-driven Computer Vision algorithms with the expressive and explainable properties of symbolic AI.
Considering on a real-word smart home use case, we will focus in particular on strengthening the classification and tracking of objects in picture sequences showing the inside of refrigerators. Extending on our available Concept Bottleneck models that integrate deep learning algorithms (Mask R-CNN networks) with structural aspects from model-based reasoning, we will work with the resulting list of tags associated with objects. The algorithms explored and developed will work with these tags as input and will aim at classifying the objects more accurately via exploiting spatio-temporal information to be extracted from the picture sequence.

The tasks of the candidate will encompass (but are not limited to):
  • Explore state-of-the-art literature
  • Explore available data and experimental setups for generating new relevant data (this includes data labeling)
  • Prototype development for experimental evaluation
  • Comparison of various approaches in terms of performance, resource demands and efficiency for the specific application
  • Co-authoring of reports and potential publications
Your profile
The ideal candidate would tailor to one or more of the following aspects:
  • Software development experience, preferably in Python
  • Interest in AI and basic knowledge of Computer Vision with Deep Learning, temporal modelling, and logic reasoning
  • Experience with/interest in deep learning frameworks like PyTorch
  • Experience with/interest in solvers or reasoning approaches/engines
