Database Specialist 2


 

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Office of Budget and Finance, Financial Information Systems team is seeking a Database Specialist 2 to establish and maintain best database design and maintenance practices.

The location of this position is at our University Park Campus. The position can be f ully in-person at our University Park Campus, or in a hybrid model of both in-person and remote. Questions related to the work arrangement should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Administer, design, analyze, implement, and maintain database structures with respect to access methods, access time, device allocation, validation checks, organization, protection and security, and statistical methods
  • Ensure database optimization, database integrity (relational integrity), and integrity of the transaction profile
  • Prepare test plans
  • Write and maintain documentation
  • Work with users and application developers to analyze database requirements and provide recommendations on industry standards and normalization principles
  • Investigate data and/or program problems; determine source of problem; take corrective action
  • Create database maintenance procedures and backup/restore methods to protect the enterprise data
  • Maintain database dictionaries and system level databases, tables, and objects

Typically requires an Associate's Degree or higher plus 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

This position requires:

  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server
  • Experience with T- SQL and ability to develop database views, packages and procedures
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills

Preferred skills:

  • Collaboration with system administration / infrastructure team to ensure platforms are maintained
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Suite of applications
  • Experience with SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services)
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as DAX and Python

Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Pennsylvania Act of 1988, Penn State publishes a combined Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report (ASR). The ASR includes crime statistics and institutional policies concerning campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.
